VA Secretary Promises to Eliminate LA’s ‘Veterans Row’ Homeless Encampment by November 1

VA Secretary Promises to Eliminate LA’s ‘Veterans Row’ Homeless Encampment by November 1

Los Angeles County is home to the most veterans experiencing homelessness in the United States. On October 20, 2021, Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough pledged to place all veterans experiencing homeless currently residing in Los Angeles’ “veterans row” into temporary housing by November 1, 2021. The VA designated a social worker and an employee who specializes in homelessness resources to connect with the veterans and help initiate their transition to temporary housing.

During the last five years, the VA has been developing a plan to construct 1,200 subsidized apartments on the campus of the West Los Angeles VA hospital for veterans experiencing homeless. Only 54 units have been completed as of June. A new draft of the plan that announces 800 units are projected to be under construction at the campus by 2023 was posted to the Federal Register on October 18. Citizens have until December 17 to offer feedback on the new plan. View the complete plan at westladraftmasterplan.org.

ETA and OCIO Improve How the Public Can Build Labor Skills

ETA and OCIO Improve How the Public Can Build Labor Skills

TrainingProviderResults.gov, a project under the Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration (ETA), helps people make educated choices when searching for training by recognizing Eligible Training Providers (ETP). The web site provides data on local programs, completion rates, and post-training employment rates, as well as info on a range of career paths, including health care, computer science, education, manufacturing, business management, and finance.

The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) collaborated with ETA to upgrade the appearance and user-experience of TrainingProviderResults.gov for those looking for training programs. These enhancements additionally support the Department’s mission to deliver top-notch job training and improved employment opportunities to the American workforce. Many of these upgrades involve the site’s search feature, including:

1. Uploading updated state data to enhance the site’s comparison feature, letting users compare programs side-by-side.
2. Defaulting to a zip code search and adding an export feature for search results.
3. Creating a “Contact Us” form to allow users to submit feedback directly on the site, rather than needing to submit an email.

Visit TrainingProviderResults.gov if you are in search of training to advance in your career or are looking to find meaningful employment.

A Clinical Resource Guide for Community Care Centers During the COVID-19 Pandemic

A Clinical Resource Guide for Community Care Centers During the COVID-19 Pandemic

VA’s National Center on Homelessness Among Veterans and the National Health Care for the Homeless Council collaborated to produce A Clinical Resource Guide for Community Care Centers During the COVID-19 Pandemic. This guide raises a holistic awareness for the variety of complex needs of people experiencing homelessness, specifically those residing in community care centers which provide 24/7 shelter, urgent care/medical respite level of care, and COVID-19 infection prevention and control measures.

This guide succinctly captures the social and medical complexities that community care center staff may face. The guide first reviews elements needed to create a supportive and inclusive tone, then offers information on basic medical care during COVID-19, and finally reflects on prevalent health conditions.

Ultimately, the goal of this guide is to support the health and safety of vulnerable individuals while they are receiving care in community care centers, as well as inspire a holistic approach for connecting community care center residents with ongoing health care and social supports that can promote their longer-term stability.

VETS’ Employer Guide to Hiring Veterans

The Department of Labor has approved the VETS’ Employer Guide to Hiring Veterans.  This intent of this guide is to provide accurate information about service member and veteran demographics; share federal, state and other resources for employers to facilitate veteran employment; and make recommendations on how to attract, train, and retain veterans. Many thanks to the Regional Veterans Employment Coordinators who drafted this Guide.  To complement the guide, Laurel Devine recently published a blog to encourage employers to hire Veterans, “Strengthen Your Workforce: Hire Veterans.”
