Welcome to the discussion on Working with Partners! Community partnerships are essential for HVRP programs to provide veterans with supportive services and access to housing.

Let’s get the discussion going! Tell us who you are, what organization you represent, and one to two of your tips for finding and building successful community partnerships.

I am Savannah Wood, the HVRP Coordinator under ECHO Housing out of Evansville, IN. Two tips I have for how we have built successful partnerships in our community:
    – Attend homeless services meetings (monthly council or inter-agency), build rapport face-to-face with the attending organizations
    – Support the other organizations (not just request referrals TO HVRP) and their goals by providing cross-referrals, make a conscious effort to understand other agencies program requirements

Savannah – Thanks so much for sharing your tips. Having a presence in the community is essential and attending meetings is a critical part of that. Your second point is also really important – being a true partner requires understanding and support.

This is a great topic and I’d love to hear whether or not it is a challenge to find Community Partnerships that are able to serve the needs of homeless women veterans, some of which may more closely mirror the needs of nonveteran women than homeless male veterans?

All comments appreciated – I’d really like to hear what you are experiencing in your local area.
