As we discussed on our last CoP Call, we will be using the month of September to post a variety of resources on Suicide Prevention and Mental Wellness.

To start, we’d like to share three short videos from our partners at Psych Hub:

    Suicidal Ideation

    Effective Treatment for Suicide Prevention

Non-Adherence to Treatment: How to Help

Please take a look at these videos; they are all very short, but filled with practical information on how to have these discussions with veterans who might be at risk.

Once you’ve viewed the videos, please leave comments, thoughts, and questions below. We know that conversations are key to suicide prevention. Let’s start that conversation now!

    Warm Regards,

    Cori

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Treatment works to successfully solve the problem so you can go on to lead a healthy life.

So true! There are so many resources available to folks but when an individual is in crisis it’s often so hard to access these resources….looking forward to discussing this more on our next CoP call…thanks for posting!

It can be very hard to access any available resources, especially when someone is in crisis. That’s why it is so important that everyone serving and working with veterans is educated in advance about the signs and symptoms of certain mental health disorders and conditions. Many mental health disorders have similar symptoms, for example anxiety and PTSD.

Here are some great videos that explain more about anxiety and PTSD. Do you see the similarities? Have you noticed any of these behaviors or heard stories like these from veterans you’ve served?

    What is Anxiety?

Listed below are some resources Veterans Affairs has released regarding mental health and suicide prevention. Let us know if you have used any of the resources and found them helpful.

    Veterans Crisis Line
Connect with the Veterans Crisis Line to reach caring, qualified responders with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Many of them are veterans themselves. The number is 800-273-8255.

    Suicide Prevention Coordinators
Each VA medical center has a Suicide Prevention Coordinator to provide veterans with the counseling and services they need. As appropriate, callers to the Veterans Crisis Line are referred to their local Suicide Prevention Coordinator.

Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Resource Toolkit for Never Federally Activated Former Guard and Reserve Members
This toolkit connects former members of the Guard and Reserves, their families, and their providers with mental health and suicide prevention resources available through VA and in the community.

    Community Provider Toolkit
This toolkit supports the behavioral health and wellness of veterans receiving services outside the VA health care system.

    MakeTheConnection.net
Visit MakeTheConnection.net to hear veterans’ candid descriptions of dealing with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. A variety of veterans — men and women, younger and older — talk about their emotions, actions, symptoms, and what they did to get on a path to recovery.

    Coaching Into Care
Family members and friends who are seeking care or services for a veteran can call VA’s Coaching Into Care national telephone service at 888-823-7458. Licensed psychologists and social workers help each caller find appropriate services at a local VA facility or elsewhere in the community.

Looking forward to a great discussion on Thursday!

Here is the Columbia Protocol mentioned by Dr. Keita Franklin from October 3’s CoP call:

The Columbia Protocol for Families, Friends, and Neighbors

Please use and share. You never know who could find this information useful.
